Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Zagora

Nestled at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, our drive unfolds through miles of captivating landscapes adorned with scattered Berber villages, each telling its own tale. En route, we reach the historic Ait Ben Hadou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to the 11th century, standing as a testament to the region’s enduring history.

Continuing our expedition, we arrive at the renowned Ouarzazate, often referred to as the Hollywood of Africa due to its expansive filmmaking studios. The drive leads us through the longest valley in the kingdom, stretching over 1052 kilometers, and the vast palm tree oases, creating a panorama of natural wonders. Our journey brings us to the Saharan town of Zagora, where the remnants of an Almoravid fortress still echo the past. Here, a camel ride awaits, and the night unfolds either in our Zagora desert camp under the starry sky or in the cozy ambiance of a hotel riad, complemented by a delightful dinner.

Day 2: Zagora – Tamegroute – Erg lehoudi – Chigaga Dunes

After breakfast, your journey takes you southward, passing through Tamagrout, located 18 kilometers away. In this quaint town, a visit to one of the oldest libraries in the kingdom, Zaouia Nasiryaa, unfolds, offering a glimpse into Morocco’s rich literary heritage. Continuing along the scenic Draa Valley towards M’hamid, a modest village reminiscent of the former Tagounit, you’ll traverse a vast plateau. The highlight of the day emerges as the colossal sand dunes of Chigaga come into view on the horizon.

A camel ride awaits, leading you to one of the most mesmerizing sights. The majestic sunset amidst the towering sand dunes. As the sun dips below the horizon, the high sand dunes of Chigaga transform into a breathtaking panorama of colors. Tonight, your accommodations are in a Berber camp, providing an authentic desert experience. Under the vast desert sky, you can relish the tranquility of the Sahara and marvel at the enchanting view of the stars.

Day 3: Chigaga Dunes – Iriki Lake – Foum Zguid – Tazenakht – High Atlas – Marrakech

Departing from Erg Chigaga, the journey unfolds as you traverse the serene and captivating wilderness, driving along the undulating sand dunes, with occasional views of the natural dried lake of Iriki. A striking contrast emerges as you reflect on the past, recalling that 30 years ago, this lake teemed with water and hosted various bird species. The landscape changes as you embark on a long off-road stretch, ultimately reaching a paved road, and passing through the quiet and tranquil Berber town of Foum-Zguid.

A stopover in Taznakht awaits, once a bustling trading post for the region. This small Berber village has evolved into one of the largest centers for carpets in the kingdom, offering a glimpse into Morocco’s rich artistic traditions. Continuing for approximately 90 kilometers, the route unfolds along serene oases and charming Berber villages, leading to the junction between Marrakech and Ouarzazate.

The return journey involves crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains once again, providing a scenic drive as you make your way back to Marrakech.
